BELGIUM

Kortrijk is one of Belgium’s oldest cities with a rich history

Kortrijk is a central city in the south of the Belgium province West-Flanders and originated from a Roman residential center at the junction of the Leie and two Roman roads.  In the Middle Ages, under the input of a flourishing flax and cloth industry, Kortrijk grew into one of the most prosperous cities in Flanders.  The city is known as the “Groeningestad” or “Guldensporenstad” by the Guldensporenslag, which took place on 11 July 1302 at the Groeningekouter in Kortrijk.  The Kortrijk Treaty (1820) was signed in the city, which established the border between France and present-day Belgium.
